Snoring ... ZZzzz ...

My goodness! My husband is taking a nap and he's snoring... he must be really tired and stressed...

What do I do? Should I wake him up, or just let him sleep... he must be really tired and stressed...

How about shrimp pasta?

I looked at the fridge and thought about what I was going to cook for dinner. Although there are available ingredients at the pantry, I am more concerned about the meat and seafood on the freezer, which we really need to consume before we move to a new house. So, there I was thinking about what to do with the shrimps. I thought I'd make shrimp pasta for a change.

Here's my version of shrimp pasta. Saute minced garlic and chopped onions in oil. Add in white wine and shrimps and cook it until the wine evaporates. Add salt, pepper and chicken boullion. When the shrimps are cooked, add in the spaghetti sauce. When the sauce is cooked, serve over pasta noodles. In this case I used spaghetti noodles, because that's what available in the pantry. Of course, my husband loved it. He said maybe my talent is into cooking. I just thought cooking is an art.

I think the shrimps were enhanced by the white wine I cooked it in with, and of course the garlic. I got the idea from a reality show that I have been watching called "Top Chef".

Must Have in the Kitchen: Oyster Sauce

Talk about cooking and making a dish to go with a New York strip. :-) My husband said we'll have steak for dinner at our mini-patio at the back of our house. I asked if there is anything else to eat aside from steak. He said it's up to me, and I asked him if he likes sauteed mushrooms. He said ok. So, I got out a can of shiitake mushrooms, garlic and onions, and there I was ready to cook. (I was on a time constraint, I have to make the dish in 5 minutes, since the steak would be done medium and will be served straight from the grill). Then I realized, this is better if there is oyster sauce. So, I got some oyster sauce and went on sauteeing the mushrooms.

Of course, my husband said it was good, it was perfect with the steak, but he confessed that while I was doing my mushrooms, he was really wondering how that would taste, considering it's just mushroom and he's not like me, who's a fan of mushrooms. He said I'll have to do that again the next time we do the steak again. I said, no, we're gonna have to experiment with something else. Hehehe.

Seriously, I told him, it's just oyster sauce. And I remember, when we go to a steak house they always have sauteed mushrooms in their menu as a side dish. I thought I could do that, and it's easy with oyster sauce. Must have in the kitchen, always. I think this has saved me with some of the dishes that I have cooked to impress my husband and his friends. And ever since doing it with chopseuy and pancit canton, I thought I could never really go wrong with this.

Domestic Goddess

I've been on a self-imposed hiatus for some time now, from my career, mostly, and enjoying the life of a domestic goddess for about two months now. Yes, I am a goddess, and it's a term that i find more fashionable as I am now embarking on my life as a housewife. There are highs and lows of being a housewife, but for now, all I can say is that the economic contribution of a housewife (well... domestic goddess) should be included in a country's GDP statistics, as this is also a noble job that contributes "something" to the economy and society.

Let me take you to some of the highs and lows of being a domestic goddess. It's not much, but so far, this is my experience.

I am happy when I get the rest that I need from the stress of a 9 to 6 office job. I don't have to worry about submitting a report, go overtime on a task that I find useless (sometimes), and dealing with undesirable people (you all know what I mean). I have free time to do what I want, like reading books, watch movies and going online to surf the internet. Thank God there is wireless internet. It is like finding treasure when you learn new information from the web or on TV. It makes you a better person.

Of course, gardening makes me high, too! You feel a sense of fulfillment and cheer when you see that your flowers have bloomed. Of course, it is springtime here, and flowers are everywhere, but nothing compares to seeing the plants that you planted yourself bloom and produce wonderful flowers. I give my husband the credit for introducing me to the wonderful world of gardening. Although, he does it more than I do, but still, it is nice to see the plants bloom and grow.

Cooking makes me high, especially, when my husband likes what I cook. I am not really a good cook, since this is something that I don't do much when I was still single. But I found that I am a good cook, because my husband loves it, and people like it (at least with reference to the dishes I made when we had a party here at our house). Thank you to the Internet, for the recipes, of course and to my mom, for letting me watch her cook. I can whip up a really good dish - especially Filipino food that my husband misses from home, all from scratch. I brag about it to my mom and my sisters via SMS that I have cooked this and that, all from scratch, and I am really proud of it. Don't be surprised if you think my husband's waistline looks bigger. That is entirely my fault.

Well, being domestic goddess also has the "lows", and being bored with everyday routine is number one. On days when I am bored and I have already read what I wanted to read and there is nothing new or good on TV, I get bored. The perfect solution is to make yourself productive, but you can't deny the fact that sometimes you really have these kinds of days: boring days. It's normal I think.

And of course, when you cook, you have to clean up and there is also an amazing pile of laundry that needs to be done (when you are single, you only have your clothes, now you are married and you also have to do his clothes). Someone's got to do it, of course, and since I am not working and I'm at home, that would be me - that's my job. Although this is easily solved by the automated dishwasher and the washing machine and dryer. Thank God, too, for technology. Man and machine can really work together.

I have made some adjustments in my personality and in the way I do things since I got married and since I became a domestic goddess. My married friends have told me before that there are a lot of adjustments that needs to be done when you get married, but no one ever told me before that these adjustments have to be done mostly by the women in the relationship. Well, surprisingly, we, the women can easily adjust, and adapt. We are created and empowered to be that way. But it's not always easy, but I thank my friends for the support and also one book called Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. At least now, I understand some things. The book is a Valentine's Day gift I ordered online for my husband, where I wrote on a note that "we should read it together". So far, we have read together the first chapter book, however, individually, I have read almost half of it now. At least, my husband knows what to do when I am hungry for attention, I merely ask for it directly and he happily obliges. :-) Face it, women (most of the time) are hungry for attention. Am I correct? Men have to know how to handle these kinds of things especially when it is that time of the month.

The biggest "high" that I get being a domestic goddess is when I am showered with affection and love, from flowers, and of course, hugs and kisses. I love it when I see that my husband is happy, in all aspects, because I feel that it is mostly because of me and the fact that I am in his life. I like seeing him smile at me and laugh at things that I say and do even on the most unexpected moments. I am happy when he treats me well and with respect, when he declares that he loves the food that I cook and actually finishes everything, when he sneaks up behind me to give me a kiss, and when he tells me that he loves me and you actually know that he means it. Nothing else can beat that last one.

These days, I am busy with packing stuff, so that takes up my whole day schedule. But, of course, I have time to blog when I feel like it. And this is one of those days. I just want to say, basically, that there is an unexplainable kind of joy, contentment and accomplishment in being a domestic goddess. Sure there are highs and lows, and to think that my experience is not even half of the experiences of all the domestic goddesses in the world - to think that I still don't have children! (and this is a different story, I know) - but, it is one experience that I am embracing right now, and most of the time, it makes me happy. It makes you feel that life is really good, and you feel blessed. I am sure some of you could agree with me.

"Isang Tanong" - The GMA-7 Senatorial Forum

I'm really impressed with how GMA-7 handled a senatorial forum among senate candidates this coming May elections, dubbed as "Isang Tanong" (One Question). I wasn't able to watch it on TV but I was able to catch it online and I applaud the network for coming up with this concept and for putting it online to educate voters all over the world.

I like some of the answers of the senatoriables, especially on some interesting topics, like what will you change in the present Senate, and the comment on the state of democracy in the Philippines. I like the answer to the first issue, where the senatoriable answered that the Senate should do policy research first before  making a law. I can relate to this because as I have observed, not much policy research has been done for certain laws, and they get approved without thoroughly understanding the imapct of such laws in the country. One of the senatoriables also commented that democracy in the Philippines is still struggling, the fact which we can observe, too, when you look at the Philippines from the outside and comparing it to democracies in other countries.

I like how some senatoriables are also organized when they answer the questions, it's as if they have been properly trained to speak within a 30 second time limit and yet they were able to say everything they want to say. Yet, there were also some senatoriables who had trouble expressing what they wanted to say. Still, some managed to answer the same "textbook" answers.

To think that this is just Part 1 of the forum, this is really a good initiative on the part of GMA-7 in reaching out and educating the voters. Part 2 is on May 6. The online videos can be found at: http://www.gmanews.tv/isangtanong
